wildlife

In 2020, PJF Farm Conservation hosted tours with world-renowned wildlife ecologists.

We’re working to develop a detailed plan for wildlife conservation and ecological restoration opportunities currently focused on birds, the rookery, butterflies, dragonflies, plants, and habitats.

Three of Louisiana’s six ecoregions and six distinct habitat types all converge at PJF Farm & Lodge. Not surprisingly, plant diversity is high with around 225 species recorded thus far – including eleven species of oak trees.

Being highly mobile, many bird species come and go with the seasons at PJF Farm, which has become a birdwatchers dream. More than 100 of species of birds have been identified throughout the year at PJF Farm.

Courtship displays begin in late January at the PJF Farm Rookery where Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, and Roseate Spoonbills can be viewed. The Rookery has grown to become our most popular site for nature photographers.

Butterflies are the most glamorous of all North American insects. Here’s our listing of the butterflies we’ve identified thus far at PJF Farm, along with the month that the critter was observed.

Wetlands cover just over half of PJF Farm’s acreage, so it’s not surprising that our dragonfly population is large and diverse. Listed below are the species that we’ve identified along with the months in which they’ve been seen.

Habitats

A habitat is a place where a plant or animal gets its nutrition, water, and shelter – much like a town or village. PJF Farm is divided into six distinct habitat types.

PJF Farm is a place where conservation of the natural landscape and restoration of the human spirit converge. Come see for yourself!
