Plant ID/Foraging Workshop

Take a professionally curated, guided walk along our scenic trails and learn how to identify edible and non-edible native Louisiana plants.

Dr. Charles Allen will lead participants on morning and afternoon hikes on PJF Farm. Participants will have the opportunity to view many different plant species, ask questions, learn plant names and other associated information, and photograph flora. At lunchtime, Dr. Allen will demonstrate how to make teas from dried leaves of selected plant species.

NOTE: Children ages 6-17 may attend but must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian and supervised at all times. Bring your lunch - water, microwave, and refrigerator are available. Please dress in comfortable walking/hiking shoes, a hat, comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and mosquito spray. There are no refunds unless the workshop is canceled due to inclement weather.

About Our Instructor

Dr. Charles Allen is a Botanist and a retired Professor of Biology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and is also retired from Colorado State University's Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. He is a charter member and past President of the Louisiana Native Plant Society (LNPS). His published books include Edible Plants, Wildflowers, Trees Shrubs, Woody Vines, and Grasses. In recent years, Dr. Allen has offered plant identification classes and edible plant workshops at home and on the road and teaches master naturalists' programs.

He and his wife, Susan own and operate Allen Acres B&B, a nature-oriented paradise in west central Louisiana. In March 2019, Dr. Allen was awarded the first Caroline Dorman Outstanding Naturalist Award by the Louisiana Master Naturalist Organization and in 1999, the Louisiana Garden Club Federation awarded him an unsolicited citation award. Dr. Allen and Bill Fontenot, PJF Farm Conservation Leader, will have their books available for purchase after the workshop.
